The family is a system in which each member plays a role.
As within any system, patterns of behavior develop between different family members based on how well they do or do not fit into the role. Maintaining these behavioral patterns can lead to balance in the family system, but an imbalance can lead to dysfunction. And when one member of the family is affected, the whole family is affected.
It is our goal to discover these patterns, reinforce the positive ones and correct the negative ones, thus bringing the family back to a centered balance. We have a few family-therapy specialties and approaches.
Play Therapy
Anyone who has worked with children understands that their ability to express what they’re feeling does not match the depth to which they’re feeling it. Play therapy allows the child to safely experience, explore and more completely express their feelings through the use of toys, games and playtime.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
This is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents who are recovering from trauma. It has been evaluated and refined over the last twenty-five years to effectively address trauma and the many ways it impacts the child’s life. It has been shown to be effective with affective (e.g., depressive, anxiety) and cognitive or behavioral problems. It also addresses the participating caregiver’s personal distress about the child’s traumatic experience, imparts effective parenting skills and facilitates supportive interactions with the child.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
This is an evidence-based treatment for young children with emotional and behavioral disorders. The approach emphasizes improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing their pattern of interaction.
Custody & Visitation
If you are in need of an acceptable location for your court-appointed visitations with your children or are in need of a neutral location for transfers of custody, Metro Family Therapy can help.
